April–May and October–November are the clean windows

Three days up, a full day in Tawang, three days back. It cannot sensibly be compressed, and the reason is altitude rather than distance: you start at 55 m in Guwahati and cross Sela Pass at 4,170 m. We build an overnight halt at Bomdila (2,217 m) or Dirang (about 1,560 m) into every itinerary so your body sleeps once at height before the pass.

The route runs Guwahati → Kaziranga → Tezpur → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Dirang → Sela → Tawang. Arunachal Pradesh begins at the Bhalukpong checkpost, where the Inner Line Permit is checked. We file it online about three days before you travel.

Since March 2024 the 2.5 km Sela Tunnel runs beneath the pass and stays open when the top is under snow, so Tawang is reachable in most winter conditions. We still go over the pass when the weather allows, because standing at 4,170 m is the reason you came.

From the driverA landslide cut the Dirang–Tawang link in August 2025 and Tawang was unreachable by road for days. Our drivers call ahead to the BRO post and to drivers coming the other way before committing to that stretch in the monsoon.

October–April for the roads, June–September for the water

Guwahati to Shillong is 99 km on NH-6 and takes about three hours, climbing to roughly 1,500 m. Shillong to Sohra — the Khasi name, still signposted as Cherrapunji — is another 54 km and drops slightly to 1,430 m.

Sohra recorded 26,471 mm of rain in 1861, still the wettest calendar year measured anywhere. Nearby Mawsynram, about 16 km away, holds the modern record for highest average annual rainfall at roughly 11,871 mm. The two villages have been trading the title for a century and the locals have opinions about it.

No permit is needed for Meghalaya, by anyone, Indian or foreign. It is the easiest Northeast trip to say yes to at short notice.

From the driverThe double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is about 3,500 steps down from where the road ends at Tyrna, and the same 3,500 back up. We drop you at Tyrna and wait — it is a four to six hour round trip and nobody enjoys being rushed on the way back up.

November–April; the park closes for the monsoon

A 193 km run east from Guwahati to the Kohora range, four to five hours depending on how the highway is behaving. Kaziranga holds roughly two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhino, and you will also see wild elephant, swamp deer and, if the day is generous, a tiger.

The park is typically closed to visitors through the monsoon, around May to October, and reopens for the dry season. Safari slots are booked separately from the car and fill up in December and January.

We leave Guwahati early. The gates keep their own hours and the drive is longer than the map suggests.

From the driverThe highway runs straight through an active elephant corridor between the park and the Karbi Anglong hills. The 40 km/h cap is enforced by automatic number-plate cameras, not by goodwill, and animals cross most when the Brahmaputra floods and pushes them out of the low ground.

November–March, when the Umngot runs clear

The Umngot river at Dawki, on the Bangladesh border, is the one people come for — in the dry season the water is clear enough that the boats appear to float on air. It photographs the way it looks, which is rare.

Mawlynnong, billed as the cleanest village in Asia, is about 30 km away and worth the detour for the bamboo skywalk and the living root bridge at Riwai. Both are day-trip distance from Shillong and neither needs a permit.

This is a long single day rather than a relaxed one. Leaving Shillong before seven is the difference between clear water and a queue.

From the driverThe clarity everyone books for is seasonal. From June the monsoon carries silt down and the Umngot runs green-brown; by November it clears again. We will tell you honestly if the month you have picked is the wrong one.

October–May; December for the Hornbill Festival

Nagaland needs an Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens, and since December 2024 foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit again after fourteen years without one. Book the permit before you book the hotel — it is the step that actually gates the trip.

Kohima is about 345 km from Guwahati. The Kohima War Cemetery is worth an unhurried hour. The Dzükou Valley trek starts from Viswema or Jakhama, both a short drive out, and is a full day on foot.

The Hornbill Festival in the first ten days of December fills every room in the district. If that is your plan, we need your dates months ahead, not weeks.

From the driverThe Protected Area Permit was reimposed for Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram in December 2024 and the situation is politically live — as of late 2025 the state government was still pressing the centre to reverse it. If you are a foreign national, ask us the week you book rather than relying on a blog post from 2023.

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is about 25 km from central Guwahati. We run transfers at any hour, in both directions, including the 04:00 departures nobody enjoys.

We track the flight. If you land two hours late the car is still there, and you are not charged waiting time for a delay that was not yours.

If your trip starts at the airport, the same driver who collects you is the one who takes you to Tawang or Shillong. You meet him once.

From the driverGuwahati traffic between Jalukbari and the city centre can add forty minutes at the wrong time of day. For a morning flight we will quote you a departure time that looks unreasonably early, and we will be right.

All eight states, and what each one actually asks of you

Every trip starts in Guwahati, because that is where the airport and the fleet are. What changes state to state is the paperwork and the road, not the car.

Northeast Indian states, permit requirements and typical trip length from Guwahati
StatePermitFrom GuwahatiWhat you drive there for
Assam No permit Base state Kaziranga, Manas, Majuli, the Brahmaputra, Sivasagar's Ahom monuments.Good four-lane highway on the main corridors. The flood season, roughly June to September, is the real constraint, not the tarmac.
Meghalaya No permit 2–4 days Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Mawsynram, Dawki, Mawlynnong, the living root bridges at Nongriat and Riwai, Laitlum and Mawphlang sacred grove.Sealed and steep. Sohra and Mawsynram are the two wettest inhabited places measured — Mawsynram holds the highest annual average at about 11,871 mm, Sohra holds the all-time single year at 26,471 mm in 1861. In the monsoon you are driving inside a cloud, and that is the attraction.
Arunachal Pradesh ILP for Indians · PAP for foreign nationals 5–8 days Tawang, Sela Pass, Dirang, Bomdila, Ziro Valley, Mechuka, Namdapha. The hardest driving in the region and the best scenery. Landslide-prone through the monsoon; the Sela Tunnel changed winter access to Tawang from 2024.
Nagaland ILP for Indians · PAP for foreign nationals 4–6 days Kohima, the War Cemetery, Dzükou Valley, Khonoma, Mon and the Konyak villages, the Hornbill Festival in early December.Reasonable to Kohima, rough beyond it. Mon in the far north is a long, slow, worthwhile day.
Manipur ILP for Indians · PAP for foreign nationals 5–7 days Imphal, Loktak Lake and its floating phumdis, Kangla Fort, the Second World War sites.Manipur has seen periods of unrest and movement restrictions since 2023. We quote it only after checking the current position with people on the ground, and if the honest answer that week is "not now", that is what we will tell you.
Mizoram ILP for Indians · PAP for foreign nationals 6–8 days Aizawl, Reiek, Phawngpui (Blue Mountain), the Vantawng falls, some of the quietest hill roads in India.Long. Guwahati to Aizawl is a serious two-day drive through Silchar. Many travellers fly to Aizawl and hire the car there instead, and we will say so if that is the sensible answer for your dates.
Tripura No permit 4–6 days Agartala, Ujjayanta Palace, the rock carvings at Unakoti, Neermahal water palace.Straightforward driving, largely lowland. Usually combined with a Silchar or Mizoram leg rather than driven for its own sake.
Sikkim No ILP for Indians · PAP for foreign nationals; some border areas need extra clearance 7+ days Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La, Yumthang, Pelling and the Kanchenjunga views. We drive it, but be told honestly: Guwahati to Gangtok is roughly 600 km through Siliguri and a long two days. Most people fly to Bagdogra and start there. If Sikkim is the main event, that is the better trip.

Permit rules change. The December 2024 reimposition of the Protected Area Permit for Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram caught a lot of foreign travellers out. Ask us the week you book — not the blog post you read last year.

Inner Line Permits: who needs one, and what we file for you

This is the step that ruins trips. It is also the step we handle, at no charge, before you land.

An Inner Line Permit is a domestic travel document that Indian citizens need to enter certain states. Four Northeast states require it: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Three do not require anything at all: Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura. Sikkim requires no ILP for Indians, though some high-altitude areas near the border need a separate protected-area clearance.

Foreign nationals do not use the ILP. They need a Protected Area Permit, which is a different document with a different process. In December 2024 the central government reimposed the PAP requirement for Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, ending a relaxation that had run since 2011. Arunachal Pradesh has required it throughout, and foreign nationals there are generally expected to travel with a registered operator rather than alone.

For Arunachal the ILP is applied for online through the state's eServices portal and is checked at the entry gate — for the Tawang road, that gate is at Bhalukpong, open roughly 09:00 to 16:00. Arriving outside those hours means waiting until morning. Applying at the gate itself is possible in theory and unreliable in practice; portal downtime and multi-hour queues are common.

So we do not do it that way. We file your permit online about three days before you travel, using the identity documents you send us when you book. The barrier becomes a two-minute stop instead of a lost afternoon. There is no extra charge for this — it is part of the quote.

What we need from you: a scan of your photo ID, a passport-size photograph, and your exact travel dates. Foreign nationals: passport and visa pages, and more lead time.

When to drive which road, month by month

Northeast India is not one season. Kaziranga is shut when Meghalaya is at its most spectacular, and the month that gives you clear water at Dawki is the month Sela is under snow. This is what we actually tell people who ask.

Month by month road and park conditions for Tawang, Meghalaya and Kaziranga
MonthTawangMeghalayaKazirangaNotes
January Tawang: Mixed Meghalaya: Open Kaziranga: Open Sela snowbound at times; the tunnel keeps Tawang reachable. Peak Kaziranga.
February Tawang: Mixed Meghalaya: Open Kaziranga: Open Cold and clear. Snow still possible on the pass.
March Tawang: Open Meghalaya: Open Kaziranga: Open The pass usually opens up. Rhododendron starts above Dirang.
April Tawang: Open Meghalaya: Open Kaziranga: Open The best month on the Tawang road. Everything open, nothing wet.
May Tawang: Open Meghalaya: Mixed Kaziranga: Avoid Kaziranga closes for the monsoon. Pre-monsoon showers begin in the hills.
June Tawang: Mixed Meghalaya: Mixed Kaziranga: Avoid Monsoon arrives. Landslide season on the Bhalukpong–Bomdila stretch.
July Tawang: Avoid Meghalaya: Mixed Kaziranga: Avoid We discourage Tawang entirely. Meghalaya is at its wettest and, if you like rain, its best.
August Tawang: Avoid Meghalaya: Mixed Kaziranga: Avoid The Dirang–Tawang link was cut by a slide in August 2025. Not a month to plan around.
September Tawang: Mixed Meghalaya: Mixed Kaziranga: Avoid The rain eases late in the month. Roads still unreliable.
October Tawang: Open Meghalaya: Open Kaziranga: Mixed The second good window for Tawang. Kaziranga reopens towards the end.
November Tawang: Open Meghalaya: Open Kaziranga: Open Everything open at once. The busiest month, book early.
December Tawang: Mixed Meghalaya: Open Kaziranga: Open Snow returns to Sela. Dawki water at its clearest. Hornbill Festival fills Nagaland.

Kaziranga's closure dates are set by the park each year and shift with the flood. Sela is a weather call, not a calendar one — the tunnel changed what is possible in winter, but not what is comfortable.

The cars

Picked for ground clearance and hill gearing, not for the brochure. We do not publish a rate card — the price depends on the route, the days and the number of people, so we quote it properly over WhatsApp as one fixed all-in figure.

Why a driver, not a self-drive

  • Bhalukpong

    The permit is the trip

Inner Line Permits are required for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, reimposed for Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram in December 2024. We file them before you land. Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura need nothing.

  • Dirang – Tawang

    The road closes without asking

A landslide cut the Dirang–Tawang link in August 2025 and Tawang was unreachable by road for days. Our drivers call ahead to the BRO post and to drivers coming the other way. When it is shut we reroute or we wait — we do not gamble with you in the car.

  • Sela Pass

Altitude is not a personality test

Above 10,000 ft most people feel it. We build the overnight halt at Bomdila or Dirang into every Tawang itinerary, carry water, and know where the nearest oxygen is. A same-day Tezpur-to-Tawang push is not something we will quote for.

  • Kaziranga

The park keeps its own hours

Gates, speed caps and night restrictions are enforced. Animals cross when the Brahmaputra floods. Our drivers have run this stretch in every season and they slow down before you see why.

  • Everywhere

    One driver, one quote

The same driver for the whole trip, so nobody re-learns your plans at 6 am. One written quote covering the car, the driver, his food and his stay. No per-kilometre surprise at the end.

Can you self-drive to Tawang? Technically yes. Here is why almost nobody does.

We are not going to pretend it is impossible, because it is not. But before you price it against us, four things are worth knowing.

First, the paperwork does not travel with the car. The Inner Line Permit is issued to a person, not a vehicle, and every occupant needs one. Many self-drive rental agreements also exclude Arunachal Pradesh outright — read the contract before you assume the car is allowed where you are going.

Second, the weather calls are not obvious. Whether Sela is crossable on a given morning, or whether you take the tunnel, is a judgement made from cloud, temperature and what drivers coming the other way are reporting on the radio. There is no app for it.

Third, the road closes. When a slide takes out the Dirang–Tawang stretch, the useful information comes from the BRO post and from other drivers, in Hindi and Monpa, on a phone number you do not have.

Fourth, altitude. At 4,170 m a breakdown, a wrong turn, or simply pushing on when you should have stopped becomes a medical problem rather than an inconvenience.

If you still want to drive it yourself, do it in April or October, not in July. But most people who price both options end up deciding that the person who has run this road a hundred times is not the expensive part of the trip.

Questions people ask before they book

Do you offer self-drive cars?

No. Every car comes with a driver. On the Tawang road that is not an upsell: the Bhalukpong checkpost, the Sela Pass weather window and the landslide reroutes all need someone who has driven them before, and most self-drive rental agreements exclude Arunachal Pradesh outright.

Do I need an Inner Line Permit for Tawang, and will you get it for me?

Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, which is checked at the Bhalukpong gate. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead. We file both online about three days before you travel, at no extra charge. Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura need no permit at all.

How many days does the Guwahati to Tawang trip take by car?

Three days up and three back, seven days in total including a full day in Tawang. The 575 km each way cannot be sensibly compressed: we build an overnight halt at Bomdila or Dirang at about 2,200 m into every itinerary so you sleep once before crossing Sela Pass at 4,170 m.

Is Sela Pass open in winter?

The pass itself closes to snow at times between December and March. Since March 2024 the 2.5 km Sela Tunnel runs below it and stays open when the top does not, so Tawang is reachable year-round in most conditions. We go over the pass when the weather allows and through the tunnel when it does not.

Which car is best for the Tawang road?

A Bolero Neo or a Scorpio N for ground clearance on the Bhalukpong to Bomdila hairpins, or an Innova Crysta if you want the same road with a softer ride, which is what most families choose. We do not send the Tempo Traveller over Sela.

What does the price include?

One written quote covering the car, fuel, the driver, his food and accommodation, and all tolls and state permits. There is no per-kilometre reconciliation at the end of the trip.

Can you pick us up from Guwahati airport?

Yes. LGBI Airport is 25 km from central Guwahati and we run transfers at any hour. We track the flight, so a delayed landing does not mean a missed car.

Which states do you cover?

All eight Northeast states: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim. Every trip starts and ends in Guwahati and the same driver stays with you throughout.
